Spas & Spies Weekend Conference
Saratoga Springs, New York

April 21 - April 23

Rogues, spas, and spies are being offered by the Jane Austen Society of North America during a weekend of lectures and tours in Saratoga Springs this April 21-23, 2017.

Lectures include “‘Quite in the Line of Lovelaces’: Seduction and Seducers in English Spa Towns” (Celia Easton, SUNY Geneseo), “‘Most Secret and Confidential’: Espionage and Intelligence in the Age of Jane Austen” (Captain Steven E. Maffeo, U.S. Navy, Retired), “The Watering Place in the 18th-Century British Imagination: Sanitizing the Bath” (Sheila Hwang, Webster University), and “History of Saratoga Springs’ Spas and Spies” (Charlie Kuenzel and Dave Patterson, Saratoga Tours).

Spas weren’t always innocent places where one simply rejuvenated their body, mind, and spirit … sometimes it was a place from which you needed protection.
