Janine Barchas (University of Texas at Austin) and Kristina Straub (Carnegie Mellon University) co-curated the Folger Shakespeare Library’s widely acclaimed 2016 exhibition, “Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen, and the Cult of Celebrity,” which commemorated both the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the 200th anniversary of Austen’s. Recognized for mixing deep scholarship with serious whimsy, the New York Times called their show “cheeky” for its irreverent combination of old and new—highbrow art with modern souvenir objects.
In this illustrated presentation of exhibition highlights, Barchas and Straub will talk about learning to work with historic non-book artifacts, offer “behind the scenes” stories, and describe the responses from a record-breaking number of visitors. This event is an official fundraiser for Chawton House Library, sponsored by the North American Friends of Chawton House Library (NAFCHL) in partnership with Jane Austen Society of North America – New York Metropolitan Region (JASNA-NY). Formerly the home of Jane Austen’s brother Edward Knight, Chawton House is now an internationally-renowned library and center for the study of early women writers from about 1600 to 1830 and continues to be instrumental in recovering our female literary heritage.
