“To sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure, is the most perfect refreshment.”
Members of the JASNA-NY Metropolitan Region met at Governors Island on June 9, 2018, for the annual Box Hill picnic.
Governors Island is a picturesque spot on any occasion; that Saturday, it was uncommonly lovely: between a warm sun and a cool breeze off New York Harbor, the Island proved an incomparable setting for a complete party of pleasure.
This party began with a picnic lunch under some trees near the ferry landing. Members read aloud from the climactic Box Hill scene in Emma, then challenged one another to identify the speaker and context of various lines of dialogue from Austen’s novels, thanks to a deck of remarkable Jane Austen playing cards!
After a leisurely post-prandial walk, the group reconvened for more chat. AGMs past and future were discussed, and the Janeites debated about Miss Woodhouse’s merits. Can you forgive her for insulting Miss Bates?
